Backspace

Nostalgia. It gets me every time. It might be a song, something I see or just a wistful passing thought that will remind me of something from past years making me long to go back in time.

I remember those crisp, white winter days when the snow couldn’t keep us inside. We would go sledding at the golf course and later “skiing” off the roof of our shed. That is until Mom caught us doing it! When Jack Frost got the best of us, and we could no longer feel our feet, we would go back inside where the roaring fire in the stove would thaw us out. There were always board games, barbie dolls and some yummy snack that Mom had baked.

In the summer we spent hours on the tree swing at Rosies store where behind the counter on the wall was a huge wooden frame that held all the neighborhood kids’ school pictures from every year we lived there. They had the best penny candy and sometimes would let us take a few extras. We went beachcombing for treasures that may have washed up on shore with the tide and played at the ocean seeing who could build the best sandcastle while the sun kissed our skin.

Finally fall would join us again with its beautiful hues. The anticipation of the new school year would grasp hold of us when Mom would take us shopping for new clothes and school supplies. That was always one of my favorite things to do even in later years with my own children.

Growing up and leaving these things behind seemed like a great idea when we were young but what I would give on some days to hit the backspace button and relive those times with the knowledge I have now of realizing how blessed I was to live them.

You don’t have to grow old to grow up!
