My dad was a quirky man. He used to do some pretty funny things….like the way he tied his shoelaces. He wasn’t allowed to teach us that skill because my mom said we would never have learned! He also had a certain routine he did every time he left the house. My sisters and brother will know what I mean.
One of the funniest things I ever saw him do was stand over the washing machine as it was filling up and proceed to push the clothing under the water with a stick. Even funnier is that I do the same thing only with my hands.
He also saved “everything” from our elementary school papers to 45-year-old camera films that never got developed to little rocks one of us or a grandchild had given him. When he was sick and could no longer go out, I brought him a tiny stone. I told him if he couldn’t go outside then I would bring the outside to him. He put that rock on the windowsill near his bed so he could see it. That little stone got placed with him when he was buried. I guess it was my way of saying “I’ll always be with you Dad.”
When I went to visit my son in Colorado, he took me to Pikes Peak which is part of the Rockies. I made him pull over so I could get a piece of rock as a souvenir. I still have it. I love that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!
~ Miss you Dad ~
