Mothers Day

I thought about my mom today because it’s my birthday. I tried to imagine how she felt knowing that another little life was soon going to join the family. She would have been ladened with labor by now (I was born at 9:21 pm). Not knowing if she was adding another girl to the three they already had or if there would be a boy, she had chosen names for both. My sisters would have been at home with my Gramma.

Being a strong woman, she would have likely given birth with grace and maturity…no silly screaming for her! I asked her once if she was disappointed at having a fourth girl. Without hesitation she said “No. All that mattered was that you were healthy.”

So here we were, now a family of six with years of hair pulling, fighting over clothes and boys, and late-night sister talks that lay ahead. In the years to come I would see my mom’s true strength as she faced one challenge after another and who made every sacrifice for those four little girls.

So though today is my birthday, I honor the woman that helped me become who I am. The one who taught me to never give up…my mom! Love and miss you every day.
