Danny Gokey is a singer/songwriter. One of his songs is titled “Tell Your Heart to Beat Again” and it is based on a true story.
A woman was having open heart surgery and after the operation was done the heart was supposed to begin beating again but did not. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to restart it. Finally the surgeon walked to the head of the table, removed his mask, and whispered into the patients ear. “I’ve done my job, now tell your heart to beat again.” Immediately the woman’s heart began to beat.
I have felt as though a part of my heart has not been beating. That part that just wants to hold on to the past before things changed and there was so much loss. But I have heard God’s voice in the middle of the night saying “It’s ok. Keep your memories but tell your heart to beat again.”
It’s a difficult thing to do; to move forward. There is a feeling of guilt in trying to be happy and a sense of anger in not being able to understand why things happened. I know that my husband would not want me to be sad but to move on and find happiness and a sense of continued purpose for my life. I never want to take for granted the blessing of learning so much from him.
So though I don’t know what the future holds, I am forever grateful to those who have helped me get this far. I know that soon my heart will learn to beat again because there are still great adventures to be had and life to be lived.
