Why The Moon

Have you ever really thought about the power of the moon. You know…that other bright light in the sky that’s more than 238,000 miles away. After all, it’s just a round orb made up of rock and metal. Sure, it controls the rise and fall of the tides and affects the length of the days on earth but I’m talking about something much different. The moon has a strange pull on our emotions. One that we can’t always explain.

I remember a time a few years ago when there was going to be a lunar eclipse. I had my camera ready. As the time drew closer, I sat in a chair on our deck and waited. It was chilly that evening and my toes were going numb but it didn’t matter. I wanted those pictures! As I happily snapped away I occasionally called to my husband who was in the house, telling him to come and see this spectacular event. He would humor me and comment on how “awesome” it was.

I was ecstatic over the photos I had captured of each phase of the eclipse. I showed them one by one to my husband and thought to myself “Wow, these are really good.” A few days later he was scrolling through his Facebook and asked me to look at some pictures of the same eclipse that had been taken by a mutual friend on her phone. He commented how good they were and that they were some of the best he had seen. Really!!! I had nearly frozen to death that night and now he was comparing my “magazine worthy” photos to someone else’s. No further comment!

Now on clear nights that same moon haunts me as it shines through my bedroom window and lands softly on the empty pillow beside me. I wish I could go back to that night on the deck and so many other times when my husband was here and we looked at it together. In time the heartache will lighten…but not yet. I still have many nights to endure. I keep him in my heart where no one can ever take him away and I know that someday we will once again see that beautiful old moon together.
